Nokia Rich Recording Technology | And how loud it can record

Nokia Rich Recording, Technology,  Nokia 808 PureView, wallpaper, news, poster, cover

A really cool Comparison of Nokia Rich Recording Technology in Nokia 808, by the Nokia 808 PureView Fan Page on facebook.  The Comparison is between how loud are events or things.

Nokia Rich Recording, Technology,  Nokia 808 PureView, wallpaper, news, poster, cover

The Maximum SPL (Sound Pressure Level) for a microphone is the loudest sound the microphone can capture without distortion.
The Rich Recording Technology in Nokia 808 has a SPL of ~ 140dB

The question: How loud is 140dB. Is it loud enough?

1. At loud rock concert the maximum sound is 115db
2. Above 125db pain begins
3. A jet engine produces 140dB sound!
4. Even short term exposure can cause permanent damage at 140dB!!!

So 808 PureView will allow you to record any sound without distortion that the human ear can tolerate. 140db +-5 is the maximum SPL of most modern dedicated mics also. How amazing is that?

News | Nokia PureView Q&A with Damian Dinning

Video, Damian Dinning, explains, Nokia, PureView, technology, wallpaper, poster, cover, news, Nokia PureView Q&A
Damian Dinning, to provide some answers, On the Nokia 808 Pureview

Q: How much full HD video can you record with a full battery without having to recharge? Does it matter whether the phone is offline/online?

A: We have not yet finalised battery performance measurements but our expectation that the amount of shots and video you can record in relation to battery life will be similar to the Nokia N8

Q: What is the longest video clip you can record on a 32Gb memory card with the best possible picture and sound quality?
A: The maximum length single video clip you can record in 1080p @30fps is approximately 27minutes depending on the recorded content. This equates to approximately 150mb per minute of video recorded.

Q: How fast is it to swap memory cards?
A: Swapping memory cards requires removal of the back cover and battery

Q: Can you explain this “oversampling” idea in layman’s terms? How can seven pixels make one?
A: Please see the white paper on the topic. We capture the information you want to keep from the 7 pixels, the detail and filter the information you don’t want, the noise. The results in significantly less noise (in many situations no visual noise at all) whilst retaining industry leading amounts of detail.

Q. Does the camera interface remember your settings from one use to the next? Having to re-set the settings can be annoying.
A. If you are using creative it always returns to exactly where you were as standard.

Q. Why was this introduced in a Symbian phone and not a Lumia?
A. The technology behind the 808 was a five-year development project. We wanted to bring this technology to the market as soon as we could to start delighting people with a passion for high quality pictures and videos.

Q. Will PureView appear in other products, such as Nokia Asha or Nokia Lumia phones in the future?
A. Aspects of this technology will be used in future products yes.

Q. Will it be possible to add a raw format?
A. RAW  in a digital camera is easier to handle as typically images have to pass through a PC, whereas RAW on a smartphone brings a whole host of end to end experience challenges, which result in some kind of compromise in the experience somewhere. We do however provide full resolution images that correspond to the aspect ratio in use as well as a reduced compression setting.

Q. How did you manage to get a phone to do so much processing that it can process 34 megapixels into 1080p/720p/nHD up to 30 times per second?
A. Please see the white paper.

Nokia 808 PureView, pureview, nokia, front, back, wallpaper, poster, cover, leaks, test, 41 megapixel camera, camera chip, size

Q. Why does the camera bulge out so much from the back of the phone?
A. This is due to the extremely large sensor and the optics required to match the resolving capability of the super high resolution sensor.

Q. What is the battery capacity on this? If you’re out all day taking photos using this camera, doesn’t it drain the battery?
A. We have not yet finalised battery performance measurements but our expectation that the amount of shots and video you can record in relation to battery life will be similar to the Nokia N8

Q. Is there any Nokia made equipment, tripods etc. that will help make make this phone a perfect filming device?
A. There is a tripod adaptor allowing you to mount the 808 to any tripod, portable USB charger and a dedicated case with a removable cap to protect the camera.

Q. Is the phone made out of polycarbonate?
A. Yes, but with a ceramic-like finish. Other materials used include stainless steel for the buttons and switches and camera bezel and Gorilla glass for lens protection and for the display.

Whilst most high end smartphones can only record without distortion to around 110db, the Nokia 808 can comfortably continue to around 140-145 db, which is 4 times louder than the conventional mics can record.

Apart from that Nokia Rich Recording can also record very low frequencies also without any distortion. The combination of all of these elements means the Nokia 808 records audio with almost CD like quality. It has to be heard to be believed.

The world's first implementation of Nokia Rich Recording technology in Nokia 808 PureView http://nokia.ly/yOTcAF records best in class stereo audio with every detail.

We’ve all been there. Waited months to see our favourite band, queued for hours to get into the gig. Got so excited when they played our favourite tune, that we just had to video it on our smartphone. Then, when we got home to relive that special moment, the sound sucked.
Well, thanks to a fantastic new audio innovation, that’s all set to change. Nokia Rich Recording takes video sound to a whole new level of brilliance. Here’s the lowdown of one of the Nokia 808 PureView’s most exciting tech highlights.

What is it, exactly?
Simply put, Nokia Rich Recording is a technology, which improves the microphone on your smartphone, enabling you to record vastly improved audio. Not only does it provide full bandwidth to match the way you hear, but it also has an extended dynamic range. This means it can better catch very low frequencies and very loud sounds, and everything in between with stereo quality.

Why do we need it?
Conventional digital microphones in smartphones start to introduce distortion and clipping (when all the notes begin to sound equally loud), once sound pressure levels reach ca. 120 dBSPL. For example, loud bass drum transients may cause such clipping. A common way to avoid this type of problem is to apply a high-pass filter, but it cuts off the low frequencies, making the recording sound thin.

How does it work?
Thanks to the extended dynamic range of Nokia Rich Recording, it’s possible to record sound pressure levels up to 140 dBSPL with no perceptual distortion. So, now you can record four times louder sound pressure levels than with traditionally used microphones. As high amplitude audio levels are tolerated, there is no need to limit frequency response. This creates the full audio bandwidth to match your hearing capabilities.

What’s so great about it?
Nokia Rich Recording is perfect for events where high average sound pressure levels are often exceeded with much higher amplitude transient sounds. So, if you have a Nokia 808 PureView, next time you video your favourite band, the recorded audio will sound exactly like you hear it. To hear for yourself what we mean, check out this video of a Nokia Rich Recording video, when compared with videos by two other popular smartphones.

Review | Nokia 808 PureView | 16 Minute In-Depth Look

Friday, March 2, 2012

Photo samples | Nokia 808 PureView

thehandheldblog.com posted more sample photos from the Nokia 808′s 41 Megapixel camera, and those represented something of an extreme case. When Nokia made the 808 pureview, they didn’t intend on people taking 38 MP photos. In fact the default automatic mode shoots at 5 Megapixels (3072 x 1728) and the image weighs in at about 1 MB, the full resolution 38mp (7728 x 4354) photo that can go upto 16 MB or more.

The benefit of shooting in this mode is the oversampling that helps reduce noise and increase color accuracy and sharpness. A 5MP photo from the 41 MP sensor means that each pixel in the 5MP image is the result of the aggregation of about 8 pixels. The result is similar to what you experience when you resize a large photo into a tiny one and it suddenly becomes nice and crisp.

The second advantage of such a large sensor is the ability to zoom. Nokia calls it lossless zoom as unlike traditional digital zoom, there is no interpolation of pixels to get a zoom effect.

The technology behind Nokia PureView is pretty amazing. So amazing in fact that we’ve heard reports about people not fully grasping the concept. Many say in blogs, sites or comments that the Nokia 808 pureview does not really have a 41 mp, its just a 8 mp. The 41 mp can`t happen in real in such a small mobile camera. So to put this all to a END, Nokia’s very own imaging guru, Damian Dinning, and get him to explain how PureView actually works. Check out Nokia 808 PureView

NEWS | Nokia 808 PureView officially 'Best New Mobile Device or Tablet' MWC 2012

product manager Jussi Asikainen, co-inventor Juha Alakarhu, SVP smart devices Jo Harlow, co-inventor Eero Salmelin

The Nokia 808 PureView may be only a couple of days in the spotlight but it's already swept everything in front of it away and now it's been claimed the “Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2012” marking an amazing week for Nokia.

Who would have thought less than a week ago that a Symbian smartphone would have crushed all comers at this year's Mobile World Congress? Sure, Apple always refuses to take part but the likes of Samsung and HTC have been left floundering in the shallow end with their handsets.

Decided by a panel of leading journalists and analysts at the show.

Jo Harlow, EVP smart devices, told Conversations after picking up the award: “It’s a fantastic award because it signifies that consumer experience counts. It’s about tech, but it’s about how tech is used to make a consumer have a fantastic experience. The imaging is fantastic; the audio is fantastic; the navigation technology is fantastic.

These are first signals that we are executing against our strategy. That we’re back. That we’re bringing great products to our consumers – and that this is just the beginning. There’s lot more to come.”

Harlow concluded: “We have a lot of work ahead of us. We’re still a challenger, and we are going to operate as we have done in this last year to deliver these great results.”

SO how many of you still say Symbian is DEAD?
